Week 49
Theme: Happy Holidays
Subject: All about winter and the holidays
Book: The Snowy Day
Target Language: I like to…(action)  ex. I like to make a snowman
play in the snow, make a snowman, throw a snowball, make cookies, sing Christmas songs, give gifts, eat delicious food

Lesson 1 (Tuesday, December 18th )
Word Wall
Teacher reviews the words and expressions that we learned last week.  Teacher asks students to say which action they like best. ex. I like to throw a snowball.
Story Time-The Snowy Day
Before the class, teacher asks students how they feel on a snowy day.  Teacher reviews all the fun activities that can be done on a snowy day (ex. make a snowman, have a snowball fight).  During the story, teacher asks students what Peter is doing in the snow and how he feels.
Activity-Finishing Bingo Sheets
Students will finish making their Christmas Bingo sheets which they started on Thursday. When they are all finished, teacher will review the Christmas words again.

Lesson 2 (Thursday, December 20th )

Today is our Christmas Party!  MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Today is a day to celebrate Christmas by playing Christmas games, singing Christmas songs and eating delicious Christmas treats!

Lesson 1 (Tuesday, December 11th )
Word Wall
Teacher reviews the words and expressions that we learned last week.  Teacher asks students to say which action they like best. ex. I like to throw a snowball.
Story Time-The Sweet Smells of Christmas
This book will engage students’ senses and get them thinking about the parts of the story.  During the story, teacher will allow students to smell the book and describe what they smell.  Teacher will explain why that object is important for Christmas.
Activity-Christmas Pipe Cleaner Ornaments
Students will make Christmas tree ornaments from pipe cleaners.  They will make candy canes, snowflakes or other Christmas related themes.
Review
Teacher will review the new words and expressions for this month.

Lesson 2 (Thursday, December 13th )
Word Wall
Teacher does a review of the target language we learned last class.  Teacher will ask students to do the actions as they do the expressions.
Christmas Bingo Words
Since next week is our Christmas Party, students will get ready for Christmas Bingo.  Teacher will explain all of the Christmas words and students will choose words that they like to write and draw on their Bingo sheets.
Christmas Song Review
Students will review “Rudolf the read-nosed reindeer”.  Teacher will add in hand gestures to add meaning to the words in the song.

Guess Who? Game

Last week, we played the game "Guess Who?"
This is a great game for describing people and animals.  The students really showed me that they can describe things by themselves.  Thay also ahd a great time doing it!

Book: One Winter’s Day

Lesson 1 (Tuesday, December 4th )
Word Wall
Teacher introduces the new target language for this month.  Teacher will explain the target language by showing students the actions.  Students will then do the actions and use the target language.
Story Time-One Winter’s Day
Teacher will show the students the story for this week and ask students about the picture on the cover and what they think the story is about.  Students may answer with words that they know.  During the story, teacher will ask students how they think Little Hedgehog feels as he walks in the cold snow.
Activity-Lovely Stockings
Students will make beautiful paper stockings.  Students will decorate them with glitter and add details that they like.

Lesson 2 (Thursday, December 6th )
Word Wall
Teacher does a review of the target language we learned last class.  Teacher asks students to do the actions as they do the expressions.
Readers
As a big group, we will read “Can you see what I see?”  Students will take turns reading and finding the objects in the ‘read and seek.’  Then, teacher will review all the vocabulary that we learned from the book.
Christmas Song
Students will learn and sing “Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer”.  We will start practicing from today so that we can sing it during our Christmas Party.

Lesson 1 (Tuesday, November 27th )
Word Wall
Teacher asks a student to volunteer and come up to the word wall.  The student will review the target language for this month.

Story Time-Stick Man
Before the story, teacher asks students to look at stick man and describe him.  Students may respond with, “It has friendly eyes.” Or “It is tall.”  During the reading, teacher will ask students what problems Stick Man faces (for example, dogs try to eat him and people throw him).  Teacher asks students who Stick Man helps and how.
Activity-Forest Tree Ornaments
Students make forest themed tree ornaments to hang on our Christmas tree.  They can choose between forest animals and plants.

Teacher reviews the new words and expressions for this month.

Lesson 2 (Thursday, November 29th )
Market Day
Students use their points to buy gifts for market day.
Word Wall
Teacher does a final review of the target language for this month.
Describing Game
Students are divided into two teams to play the describing game “Guess Who”.  Students will ask questions such as, “Do you have big eyes?” or “Do you have long brown hair?” to guess the other team’s person to win the game.

Teacher introduces the new words and expressions for this month.  Teacher asks students what they recall from last week’s class.  Students share what they learned.

Story Time-Deep in the Forest
This week’s book ‘Deep in the Forest’ is a wordless book.  It means it doesn’t have any words.  Students are then challenged to tell the story with their words and ideas.  Teacher will ask students what is happening in the pictures.  Students answer with short sentences like, “The bear eats the baby’s food” or “Mom and dad get angry.” 
Activity-Forest Finger Painting
Students use paints and shaped sponges to make a forest picture.  Students will be encouraged to use ideas and characters from ‘Deep in the Forest’.

Lesson 2 (Thursday, November 22nd )
Word Wall
Teacher goes over the target language we learned last week.
Step into Reading Readers
Teacher and students will read “Tae Kwon Do” together.  Each student will have a chance to read the story.

Students will use the sentence cards to make interesting sentences.  This week we will add “don’t” so that students can make negative sentences like, “I don’t like bugs” or “I don’t have friends”.

Story Time-The Gruffalo’s Child
Teacher reviews last week’s book ‘The Gruffalo’ and introduces this week’s book ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’.  Before reading, students recall things that they learned about the Gruffalo and the forest.  During and after reading, students identify things in the forest that they know.
Project-Big Forest
This week, both classes will share the same activity.  We will make a big forest together with different materials.  Students will choose what part of the forest they would like to make.  We will start on Tuesday and finish on Thursday.

Students make pendants with pieces of wood.  Students will choose a nature or forest theme for their designs.

Sentence Making Activity

Since we finished reading the Sight Words Readers, it's a great time to start reading and making sentences!
Today, we used three sets of colored cards to make sentences.  Some students used the cards to make funny sentences like 'I eat books' and 'You make cats'.  It was fun and they learned a lot!  Here are some pictures of students and their sentences.

This funny boy wrote: You make cats.  I eat friends. (So he was smiling...)

Making Witch Finger Cookies
We will make cookies in the shape of scary witch fingers.  We will make them and then bake them in the oven.  Then, we will enjoy them together!
Halloween Vocab Bingo
Students will use the Bingo cards that they made last week for the game.  Students will win exciting Halloween prizes.
Trick or Treat!
Students do a big Trick or Treat to the teacher for Halloween treats.


Lesson 2 (Thursday, November 1st )
Market Day
Students use the points that they earned to buy gifts.
Sight Words Cards Activity
Students will be given a set of sight words that they will use this month.  Teacher will show students how to make and read basic sentences with the cards.  When students are ready, they will make their own short sentences.
For example: I + like + you, I + am + a + girl, I + don’t + like + ants
Final Review
Teacher reviews all words and expressions that we learned in October.  Teacher introduces the new theme for November, Life in the Forest.
